BEING A FUSSY EATER: THE LOW DOWN

Saturday

A while ago I started a series called, The Low Down, where I will just talk about certain topics, giving you 'The Low Down'.

Mussels in garlic sauce with caption

Since I can remember, I have always been a really fussy eater. Quite a lot of kids can be but I never seemed to grow out of it. It would probably be easier to tell you the foods I do like than listing the ones I don't. I basically don't like ANYTHING spicy, I also don't like tea or coffee (big shock alert).

People regularly laugh at my 'boring' taste in food, and I do too, but it is the bane of my life. Something that stands out to me is that I used to avoid going to Nando's because I got plain when everyone else got medium and someone always had something to say about it. "Sorry guys, I can't come tonight, um, I need to wash my hair." I don't really care about things like that anymore it just seems bizarre to me that people have such opinions on food tastes. Incidentally, I have recently graduated to lemon and herb!

I really wish I liked a lot more foods than I do because then I wouldn't have to worry about what we're having for dinner if I go to someone's house, or worry that I'm being really annoying if I say I don't like something. Luckily now, everyone I know knows that I'm a fussy eater so if I go to theirs for dinner, they will make sure it's something I like (love those kinds of people).

It wasn't always that easy when I was growing up though. It was the absolute WORST when I would go to friends houses for dinner and their mum had made something I didn't like. Because I felt so bad, I would try my hardest to eat it even if I didn't like it. But when it's spicy food, I literally can't even force myself to eat it! Once I remember going to someone's and their parents had made a chilli con carne (one of my top WORST dishes) and I did try to eat it. In the end, I just had to say I'm so sorry, this is too spicy for me. Then, I remember the parents kind of getting slightly annoyed even though they tried not to show it.

I still love food though. Even though I'm quite fussy, I do love the foods that I will eat and I do try new foods to see if I'll like them. What kind of eater are you? Are you fussy or will you eat most things? Everyone has their own preferences, I just wish I liked more things but it's probably good that I don't because I love food too much now anyway.

  1. This is so relatable. I'm a fussy eater too and people get so annoyed. They way I see it is I know what I like and I would rather enjoy a meal than be disappointed.

    1. Yeah exactly! I always get so worried before going to someones house for food. Now I have the confidence to say I’m really fussy beforehand haha

  2. I'm a fussy eater too! When I don't want to eat a certain dish or I'm simply not in the mood to eat it, I get irritated very easily. Then I would simply eat some readymade instant noodles or ramen lol!

  3. Thanks for sharing, there are some food I have got more fussy about, as my health has changed, but I do like to try new foods from different cultures and places

  4. I am a bit of a fussy eater, too, as it is difficult for me to try new foods if it doesn't look "right". So I would go back to my, always reliable, pasta with parmesean cheese!

  5. I was really fussy when I was younger, but middle-age and having kids of my own has made me just eat whatever is put in front of me. I'm far more willing to try stuff now.

  6. I will generally have a got at most food, but there are some things that I am not a huge fan of. I think as you get older as well your tastes change, so there are definitely foods that I would eat now that I didn't before and vice versa.
I don't know why people feel the need to judge other's food habits and preference. Just let everyone enjoy what they enjoy!

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. Agreed! I am a lot less fussy now but still can’t deal with spice or anything and am forever being made fun of for that, it’s so weird people will find anything won’t they.

  7. I used to be so fussy back when I ate everything, I hated all seafood, most meat, a lot of heavy creamy products- the list goes on. But since turning vegan, I'm not really fussy now. I know that it's heavily restricted to begin with, but if there's a vegan option available there's a good chance I'll like it x

    1. I always try to eat less meat etc but I feel like I am too fussy to be vegan, I would probably just eat chips all the time. Wish I was less fussy so I could try it though :) x

  8. I'm fussy when it comes to food quality but I'm not fussy in the sense that I'll try and probably like most things. Maybe I'm just a bit of a food snob haha! It was really interesting to read about your experience as a fussy eater x

  9. I do eat most things but people still call me fussy! I like mildly spicy food, but I opt for the mildest sauces at Nando's too!

    1. Yeah I suppose there is a lot I will eat but also a lot I won’t eat too and what I won’t eat seems to be more noticeable to people

  10. It doesn't matter being a fussy eater as long as you enjoy the food you like.

  11. I used to be SUCH a picky eater and didn't any vegetables. At all. But thanks to yummy recipes and encouragement from my boyfriend, I slowly began trying new things and finding out that I actually like most foods if they are cooked the right way! One of the goals of my blog is to encourage picky eaters to branch out :) 2 years ago I literally ate chicken and pasta all the time but now veggies are some of my favorites! It's crazy how our palates can change over time

    1. Yeah that’s good! Sometimes I try things again just to check I still don’t like them because there are a lot of things I like now that didn’t like before, one of them being wine haha!

  12. I had the same journey as you with Nando's 😂 I used to be so much worse with food than I am now... but I still have my staples. I don't see a problem with it - we like what we like!

  13. I'm literally such a picky eater that I can fully understand the pain of eating at someone elses house or visiting a boyfriends house. I literally can't stand the food at nandos haha x

  14. I have some issues around certain foods after a holiday where some cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and Brussel sprouts had been overcooked and placed next to me at a table, the smell was almost a rotting one and it made me sick. I can not get over that and people think it’s really weird!

I can never understand why people think others food choices are open for debate, as you say, we like what we like.

    Great post x

    1. Thank you! I always find that people judge you for what you don’t eat rather than what you do eat. In my experience anyway x

  15. Great post! I would say that I am a fussy eater as there are quite a lot of foods I dislike.

  16. I've always been referred to as a fussy eater so I know where you're coming from. I'm not as bad as I used to be, but when I was younger I was so difficult to please with food. There's so many people that are the same. It doesn't matter what other's think though - as long as you like what you eat then that's the main thing :)

  17. I definitely wouldn't describe myself as a fussy eater, however, my body is a little fussy on some things. For example, I developed a meat intolerance, so I can't eat any meats except seafood without getting horribly sick. That being said, I have discovered the incredible world of vegetarian eating and there are SOOO many options out there that I CAN enjoy!

  18. I'm a vegetarian and although I'm not a fussy eater sometimes it feels like it when there aren't many options for me to choose from! Great post! x

    1. Whenever I go out for food the vegetarian options always seem to be spicy or hve lots of mushrooms in sadly. Or it will just be a margharita pizza or something so it must be frustrating to find things that you really enjoy x

  19. I'm sort of inbetween a fussy eater for exmaple i dont really like salad so like burger have to come with no lettuce and i couldnt eat a mixed salad from the supermarket but i will eat typical foods that a fussy eater would never touch like sushi, mushrooms, mussels, that kind of thing! I've recently started enjoying tomatoes which id never eat but im still too scared to start trying new things!
